Mangalore Province Chapter

Ursuline Franciscan Sisters, Mangalore Province had their IX Province Chapter in Shanthi Dham Provincialate, Derlakatte from October 17th – 21st, 2021 on the theme “Repair My House”. Chapter delegates attended the retreat as a preparation for the Chapter preached by Rev. Fr Joe Mannath SDB. He inspired us through his deep insights that ‘In the heart of God there is always place for you’. A religious call ultimately is finding a love dearer then self, dearer than life, large enough to fill one’s life and deep enough put forth all one’s rich, untamed energies into a purposeful commitment.

Rev. Sr Susheela Sequeira, the Superior General was the President of the Chapter. In her inaugural address, she dwelt on the three significant texts for introspection on the theme: First to Listen to what the Spirit says (Acts 2:8), Second to Discern the signs of the times (Mt 16:3) and Third to Build the Kingdom of God (Mt 6: 33).On the first day Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha celebrated the Holy Eucharist and gave a befitting message to the Chapter Delegates emphasizing on the need to repair our house taking the example of St Francis of Assisi, St Angela, St Ursula and our founder Fr Urban Stein through the Gospel way of life in order to heal the humanity with mercy and forgiveness.

In her vote of thanks to the Bishop Sr Rita Vas, thanked and appreciated Bishop profusely for his undaunted service in the diocese and his able and dynamic leadership through which the diocese has grown in the areas of spiritual, educational and pastoral life.

On October 19th, 2021, Fr Paul Melwyn D’Souza OFM Cap., Episcopal Vicar for Religious in Mangalore diocese celebrated Holy Eucharist and prayed for the Chapter delegates. Same day the new Provincial Team was elected, headed by Rev. Sr Clara Menezes, Councillors Sr Juliana Pais, Sr Leena D’Souza (Katipalla), Sr Severine Crasta and Sr Susheela Monterio. After the prayer service they were greeted by the chapter delegates, Generalate team, Community and the Sisters of the vicinity and the Novices.

Thereafter she was appointed the Principal of St Michael Composite College, Hubli. Later she was the Principal of St John International School, Palghar, Mumbai, managed by Aldel Education Trust. After being elected to the Provincial Councillor in 2015, in her second term she has been the Vice Provincial, well known for her Committed, reliable, social and approachable personality.

On October 20th Rev. Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ officiated the Eucharist, greeted the new team of the Province. In his preaching he urged the Sisters to be relevant in our mission for the 21st Century. Referring to the synod on synodality and encyclical Laudato Si of Pope Francis he insisted to ‘Listen to the cry of the earth and walk with the poor’ to continue Christ mission.

On October 21st at the conclusion ceremony of the Province Chapter the President Rev Sr Susheela Sequeira in her concluding address invited the Sisters to ignite that fire of love in the Sisters of the Province to live in holiness, enthusiasm, newness and joy, so as to renew and rebuild the Province in all the aspects of religious life and finally the delegates moved to the Foundation House of the Ursuline Franciscan Congregation at St Ursula’s Convent, Bolar at 3.00 pm with the Eucharistic Celebration offered by Rev. Fr Praveen D’Souza, the Provincial Minister of OFM. In his homily he said, there are three ways around: God who encounters us and we who encounter our own Sisters and then the world around us. We listen and discern in the noisy world in the silence of our hearts what God plans for our life and thus we discern together as a community/Congregation in responding to the world in the present context and being relevant to our times.

After the Eucharistic celebration Mangalore Province inaugurated the You Tube. It was officially done by the President of the Chapter V. Rev. Sr Susheela Sequeira the newly elected Provincial Superior Rev. Sr Clara Menezes as well as the former Provincial Superior Rev. Sr Rita Vas accompanied by the General Councillor Rev. Sr Lydia Serrao. Thereafter the newly elected Provincial Team was greeted by the Sisters of St Ursula Convent. We are indebted to God the Almighty for protecting and leading us to march forward with the flame of ignited hearts.
