Thenzawl is a town in central Mizoram, now in Serchhip district. Its history is closely connected with the movement and settlement of Mizo communities, the traditional system of village chieftainship, British administration, and the development of modern Mizoram.
The history of the Thenzawl area goes back further than the present settlement. Mizo communities traditionally lived in relatively small, independent villages under hereditary chiefs. Because shifting cultivation was the principal form of agriculture, villages could move from one location to another over time. Land was traditionally controlled by the village chief and allocated to villagers for cultivation. There is also evidence of an older cultural connection with the area. A study of the Halam community records the place as Ramthenzawl in Halam folklore. The nearby Vantawng (Vantong) Falls is mentioned in their oral traditions, suggesting that the wider Thenzawl region was inhabited or visited by communities before the establishment of the present town.
Modern Thenzawl has developed beyond being an agricultural settlement. It is particularly associated with Mizo handloom weaving, which has become an important part of its cultural identity. Tourism has also become increasingly important. The surrounding area includes: Vatawng Falls, Thenzawl Deer Park, Thenzawl, Golf Course, Thenzawl Lake (Dilpui)Lau Rive, Vaibiak, Tualvungi Tomb, surrounding forests and hills.
